These Seven Styles will Dominate in 2022

We asked a few experts about the top fashion trends for 2022 to help you refresh your closet. You can look forward to pleated maxi skirts, explosions of happy colors, clean-cut college styles, and iridescent pearls that remind you that the world is your oyster, even if your runway is still the hallway between your home office and the kitchen.

1. Preppy sweater vests

The vest is the most valuable piece of preparation right now.

When preparing, or the kind of clothes you might see on Ivy League students, walked down the spring 2022 runways, even the nerdiest fashionistas gave a golf clap of joy. Is this smart, buttoned-up style's best student? The cardigan sweater.

Cher and Dionne, the stars of Clueless, wore these sleeveless knit tops all the time in the 1990s. This year, they're going to be everywhere. And according to stylist Lauren Rae Levy Vigneron, who started the styling and consulting firm LRL Group in New York City and Malibu, the nerdier something is, the cuter it is.

Seven Styles Dominate

"Cable knits and weird prints are all the rage," she says, pointing out that Harry Styles, who set fashion trends, wears a lot of vests. "My favorite way to pull off this look is with a cozy fabric like cashmere in a solid or fun printed neutral shade and a crisp white or ivory button-down shirt underneath." If your vest is big, wear it with straight or wide-legged pants, a miniskirt, leather pants, or a pleated skirt, which is another trend for 2022.

Emma Trask, a celebrity stylist in Los Angeles who works with Scarlett Johansson, Beyonce, and Carrie Underwood, says, "I love vests, and there are so many options for them right now." Trask is also the founder of The Chrysalis Lab, a lifestyle brand that turns old pieces into new ones. "Wear a sweater vest over a maxi dress or an oversized suit vest over a slip dress for a mix of masculine and feminine style."

2. Denim-on-denim

Britney and Justin's famous all-jeans-matching moment on the red carpet at the 2001 American Music Awards made headlines, but today's monochromatic style will change the way you look at denim. Designers are making this "dare to wear" trend less shocking without taking away from its "wow" factor.

Vigneron says that modern shades of denim are smoother and have been washed less. "The patchwork we're seeing now is cleaner than in the past, which is why some designers call it 'paneled,'" she says, adding that the stitching is hidden on the inside of the garment to make the change from one color of denim to another look smooth on the outside.

She suggests that you keep it clean if you want to wear denim on denim in a conservative way. She says, "Don't wear jeans that are almost the same color." Instead, match them on purpose, or don't match them at all.

3. Textures of knitted and crocheted fabrics

Your favorite Athlete hoodie and joggers have served you well, but it's time to move on from loungewear to clothes that combine comfort and style. Denise Caldwell, a fashion stylist and TV expert in Brooklyn, says that knitwear became the most popular thing to buy during the pandemic. "You can wear it to hang out at home, or if you need to run a quick errand, you can put on some knitwear that makes you feel good and like you put in minimal effort to get dressed."

In 2022, crochet sets and styles like ankle-length dresses and crop tops that go with wide-legged pants will be more popular than plain sweaters. She says of the alternative to the traditional jogging suit, "A knitwear set has become a trendy way to do glam leisure." "Think of a tight top and bottom that go together."

Trask says that knits make clothes feel instantly cozier and more expensive. "Knit sweater dresses are so versatile. You can dress them up for the street with boots and a matching belt, or dress them up for the evening with heels, a long blazer, and a jeweler.

4. Skirts with folds

That well-known fold is coming back. The playful pleat won't look like a school uniform in 2022. Instead, it will have a more grown-up look, like Dior's girly mini skirts or Potenza Schooler's elegant maxis.

Vigneron says that this style is full of femininity. "I love wide pleats on shorter pieces as much as I love tight pleats on midi-length pieces." For a casual daytime look, wear your pleats with a blouse or sweater and sneakers or flat boots. For a dressier evening look, wear them with heels. "I also love vintage concert t-shirts with pleated skirts for a girly look with a bit of edge." You could also top them off with a denim or leather jacket and sneakers to look like a rock star.

"I love a pleated leather (fake leather is best) skirt with a sweater that can be tight or a little big and tucked," says Trask. "Add a statement belt and coordinated heel or boot." She suggests going for a soft look with a knit pleated skirt and a matching sweater for a high-end but airy look.

5. Pearl shell

Real and fake pearls are used as iridescent accents all over the runways, from head to toe, like in pearl-encrusted headbands and pearly booties. Recently, even pearl accents on the skin and nails have been seen on the red carpet.

Even though this style isn't new—Caldwell says it dates back to the 16th century—wearing pearls to dress up is more daring this year. "Pearls are beautiful and make a statement," she says. "They have been made more modern with details that are big and studded." Styles range from cardigans that look like they belong in college to busters with pearly accessories.

Seven Styles Dominate
"Pearls add a subtle touch of elegance to a piece," says Trask. "They change many different fabrics." Pearls have been put on everything from chiffon to cashmere to wool by designers. "Mixing pearls, rhinestones, and fringe can make a super glam rocker look, and pearl embellishments on sheer or mesh fabric can make a sexy look even better." Putting pearls in creative places on knit pieces is a new take on the classic prep look, and mixing pearls with denim, leather, and metal gives the street style an edge.

6. Statement cut-outs

Even more, than the cut-out dresses you've seen recently, small peeks of skin are getting a lot of attention, whether they're strategically placed along the waist of a blazer or the arms of a bodysuit. It's up to you what you want to show, which makes each outfit unique.

Trask says that cut-outs are a great way to make an outfit different and interesting. This style brings out your sexy side, but to tone it down, she suggests pairing an item with something that covers it up, like a cut-out dress with a duster and boots or baggy low-rise pants with a cut-out top.

7. Dopamine dressing

As we try to make sense of the last two years, escaping into our closets could be taken both literally and figuratively. Dopamine dressing is when you wear happy clothes, often full of colour, to make yourself feel better. This trend is just what the doctor ordered. It's named after the "happy hormones" your brain makes that help you feel good.

"Lockdowns changed the way people thought about dopamine dressing," says Vigneron. According to Pinterest's 2022 trend report, the number of searches for "vibrant outfits" has grown by 16 times. This means that now is the time to go somewhere over the rainbow.

"Cheerful, bright colors make people happy, and who doesn't want to do all the things that make them and those around them happy?" she asks. In the spring and summer of 2021, the trend started with DIY tie-dye athleisure wear. It then moved on to bold color blocks. Vigneron says, "If it makes you happy and sure of yourself, do it." "I like how this trend lets you mix textures and layers, but I also like seeing how other people try it out and make it their own."

Color isn't always the key to dopamine dressing. It can be about patterns, textures, or anything else that makes you happy.

"Joy dressing with bright colors is a trend about outfits that look good and make you feel good," says Caldwell. For a pop of personality, she also wears florals, rainbows, and abstract patterns. "This year, it's all about wearing comfortable clothes that make you feel good. Adding color can instantly make you feel better and give you a new look."
